The Sassoon International Creative Team, led by Mark Hayes, unveiled their latest Academy collection JEJUENE at Salon Live, Salon International 2017, London.

The team presented the new collection with a series of informative cutting and colouring demonstrations and choreographed presentations fully displaying the magnitude of creativity, the Sassoon team exude.

“This Season we celebrated individuality and authenticity as well as championing the truly contemporary, taking inspiration from an eclectic array of source material to create a stylishly ambient hair landscape,” says Mark.

Inspiration for the AW17 Academy collection came from today’s fashion, which has a uniquely eclectic and individualist approach. Designers are taking inspiration from an amazing array of source material that creates an aesthetic that references nostalgia but is not tied down by history. Vintage seventies prints and rebellious leather jackets, vivid sequinned tops alongside folksy embroidered denim are a revival of dressing up with an individual, innovative spirit. It’s this uniquely diverse and nonconformist approach that has inspired the Jejeune Collection by Sassoon Academy.

The 200 collection was inspired by the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery. It explores the influences and the expressions from the African Diaspora. This collection celebrates liberty, freedom and equality. The collection also takes influence from the movie ‘300’, where the Spartans fought for freedom with absolute strength and determination from the Persian Horde.

Influenced by Cobra snakes. The texture of the skin, the intertwining of the tails and the hood that encompassed the cobra’s face were influences in both shape and texture. Cobras can be found in various shades in the wild as well which influenced the color palette.

TravisBandiera_Iridescene

Iridescence (also known as goniochromism) is the phenomenon of certain surfaces that appear to change colour as the angle of view or the angle of illumination changes. Examples of iridescence include soap bubbles, butterfly wings and sea shells, as well as certain minerals. My interpretation of iridescence with my collection translates especially to colour for obvious reasons. I will always be using the idea that different surfaces/minerals create different tones due to density and using this on certain styles and haircuts, for example; a lighter texture such as a bubble would feature lighter tones directly translating to lighter hair literally with hair colour, movement and free-flowing styles. Darker tones with a heavier density like an oil spill would be harder, with a more structured/finished aspect to the hair and reflect a ‘cooler’ variation of colour tones. With the collection I decided that I would be sticking with a very strict colour palette. Also aspects of the styling, makeup and photography are designed to obviously enhance the overall effect.

The collection takes inspiration from the term ‘psychedelia’, which rose to fame in the 1960s among a subculture that manifested itself most notably in artwork and music. Derived from the Greek words ‘to make visible, to reveal’, (translating to soul revealing) psychedelic art boasts distorted, surreal visuals alongside a full spectrum of bright, bold colour patterns. Utilising the brand’s latest colour technique – Prisma – which has been designed to combine fluidity and effortlessly-blended colour, the team has curated a collection boasting bright, distorted and deconstructed colour alongside a range of styling disciplines for a look that is out of this world.
