We have entered the era of PermaYouth, an age of age-denying where the traditional boundaries between adolescent and adult have eroded. In uncertain times we look back with nostalgia to a past that we’ve already lived when there was no pressure, just play. Kidhood, the latest collection from Sassoon Academy subverts the world of the adolescent by mashing up the most radical elements of today’s teenage cool. Isolated Heroes; the isolated heroes of intersex merge as one in a monochromatic world of stripped back utility. Taking inspiration from the fourth sex experimentation of Raf Simons, a fashion designer obsessed with the undefined state of adolescence, Sassoon Academy presents G.I Joe and jarhead mohawks in carbon grey mixed with zipped edge bobs in cool brown and flat red. Courtney; grunge goddess and style icon Courtney Love inspires a new take on rock chic. Her 1990s Seattle-thrift store meets Riot Grrrl look mixed satin baby-doll dresses with heavy boots, sparkling tiaras with wild hair and smudged red lipstick. Here, head-hugging layers and heavy fringes in festival faded pink flaunt high vis roots in bright red and orange. Hyper-Romance; the candy sweet cutesters or ‘idol’ groups of South Korean K-Pop have saturated the market with their bubblegum sound, drilled choreography, glossy image-construction and day-glo fashion. Sassoon takes a touch of K-Pop and mixes it with the tetris cubes of an eighties arcade. The result is a combination of illusive tapered shapes, Erte fringes and chaotic combinations of cyclamen, violet and mauve.

Initial discussions for the collection focused on the elements of hair that can have the most transformative effect on a clients look. The unanimous answer was the fringe. The bottom line for the On the The Fringe collection was to showcase fashion-forward looks that also reflect the ethos of Bond’s daily in-salon work where precision meets street with current fashion trends. Geometric shapes and lines epitomize the design line for both cutting and coloring. The contouring prevalent in the collection follows the latest in catwalk fashion and interior design elements displaying strong, clear lines with depth and dimension. Bold colours and blending tones combine to make the collection cohesive. On the Fringe showcases the talent of Bond’s artistic teams’ accomplished skills in attention to detail, colour, form and movement. At a deeper level, the fringe can reveal, hide or highlight the eyes and effect how the client interacts with the world. The fringe is transformationally powerful.

The inspiration for my first black and white photo shoot was to experiment with light and texture with an emphasis on the head shape and how to morph and play on it. This theme of texture was also threaded through the styling with the use of a double denim androgynous feel infused across the collection; this was then reflected in the hair, complementing it well. Using a combination of braiding, jewellery and paper to create Illuminate, touches such as leaving regrowth to elicit more texture within the look and creating a grunge feel were used. The inclusion of a haircut and colour combination really defined the head shape, and the variation of using paper and crocheting hair through holes in the paper, produced an undone messy frizz to the look.
