    alternative hair show 2017
15 October 2017 Royal Albert Hall – London (UK)

Let’s celebrate the 35th anniversary of
    ALTERNATIVE HAIR SHOW with
UTOPIA: the global hair event of the year

This year the ALTERNATIVE HAIR SHOW celebrates its 35th anniversary with a Gala Show that promises another outstanding celebration of the art and craft of global hairdressing linked inexorably with the generosity of the profession and the many professional product companies who have backed it over the ensuing years.

The background is a simple story of love, determination and commitment to fight leukaemia, a cancer of the blood notorious for the way it affects children and their families.

It was in 1983 that Tony and Maggie Rizzo were devastated by the loss of their first-born child, Valentino, to the ravages of leukaemia.
They responded to this tragedy by seeking out some of the world’s foremost hairdressers to help create a unique charity fundraising event at London’s Camden Palace.

From this event the Alternative Hair Show was born.

It has gone on to raise millions for the leukaemia cause and at the same time has become an enduring headline event in the international diary of hairdressing.
Such was the success of that first show that sell-out events have followed in London every year and sister-shows have taken place across the world – Austria, Italy, USA, Japan, Korea, Russia and USA.

These Shows have all been dedicated to raising vital cash to fund life-saving research in the UK and in the countries where the shows were staged.
This year’s show, ambitiously entitled UTOPIA, will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 15th October, and will be a special anniversary and celebration of 35 years of Alternative Hair.

The evening promises to be both poignant and, as ever, filled with creativity, imagination, excitement and entertainment, inspired by today’s leading stars from the world of hairdressing.

            ordas-figaro

Global hairdressing icons once again gathered in Sydney at the Seymour Centre, before an audience of over 800 hairdressers over an epic THREE days of pure education and creativity, to bring to life the third installment of Ssh! Australia.

              emiliano-richard-kavanagh emiliano-vitale-peter-gray-benni-tognini emiliano-vitale-pierre-saint-sever-richard-ashforth-and-benni-tognini

An awe-inspiring THREE days comprising the Ssh! show, Masterclass and bespoke Workshops with SACO & Mazella&Palmer, Ssh has truly become a world-class event; remaining true to its values and pushing boundaries unlike anything that has ever existed in Australia, and revered around the world as a truly unique experimental event, pioneering creative exploration.

Led by Australian Hairdresser of the Year Alumni and legends of the global industry, Emiliano Vitale and Benni Tognini, the impressive line up of talent for 2016 comprised:

              • Dove Palmer & Jean-Baptiste Mazella – Mazella&Palmer (UK)
              • Richard Ashforth & Pierre Saint Sever – SACO (UK)
              • Andy Wong and Nick Chung – EROS (Taiwan)
              • Richard Kavanagh (Australia)
              • Robert Lobetta (USA) and Team Lobetta (Kobi Bokshish, Alexandra Newman and Jamie Furlan – Australia)
              • Peter Gray (USA)

As the audience settled in to embrace the poetic universe of contemporary hair culture, Jules Tognini introduced each guest artist to the stage.

              Mazella&Palmer

Popular duo, Mazella&Palmer, where first up, preceded by a dreamscape of haunting melodies and shadow figures which evolved into their presentation of Demeure; a collection inspired by English fashion photographer Tim Walker and his dreamy, nostalgic pictures. Demeure enveloped the audience in a daydream and fantasy, telling stories conjured directly from the imagination that most of us left behind in childhood, all whilst staying true to the duo’s philosophy of not just how to cut hair, but why.

“This event, and the education it imparts, is one of the best in the world. For us, it’s Number One in the sense of keeping it pure,” says Dove Palmer.

              Richard Kavanagh

Mercurial and magical, Australia’s Richard Kavanagh embraced the ethos that is Ssh! challenging mindsets with an abstract narrative on the lack of connection we have in the modern era, and how important the human aspect of the craft of hairdressing is and our need to honour that. Richard paid homage to how important the craft of hairdressing is – it being one of the true crafts that cannot be mechanized or digitized.

Nick Chung and Andy Wong- EROS

The powerhouse duo of Nick Chung and Andy Wong, and their entourage that comprise Taiwan’s EROS catapulted the audience into a new world of HUVATAR (human+avatar), where rapid technological developments have caused a change in the world, and influenced the human body. EROS challenged the audience to see body shape in different forms, coupled with new innovations in hair and architecture.

              Robert Lobetta

Robert Lobetta mentored and led a trio of Australian young guns – Alexandra Newman, Jamie Furlan and Kobi Bokshish – along with the audience into the world of ‘Asylum’. A safe place for the experimentation of your most wildest ideas, where there’s fluidity of pieces, aggression in beauty and the opportunity to be brilliant by risking and trying something different.

              SACO

Striking colours and contemporary takes on classic shapes and textures encapsulated SACO’s presentation of their I.D. Collection. Taking influence from performance artist and designer, Leigh Bowery, Richard & Pierre, demonstrated that words were not necessary; it was sheer creativity and technique that piqued and held the crowd’s attention.

              Peter Gray

The final presentation of the evening to imbue the audience with a definitive shot of creativity and a social conscience message was America’s Peter Gray. A man who needs a reason or cause to present, and to raise awareness, Peter’s strikingly powerful show shone the spotlight on human trafficking; with the finale showcasing a model encased in a ‘web’ of twine/cotton; a direct reference to the underworld web that is the human trafficking trade.

Says Peter, “This event, Ssh! Australia, is truly what is an incredible global event. Creativity with a purpose is what I aspire to! Inspiring causes motivate me to push the boundaries. Ssh was an amazing opportunity to work with an amazing team using the medium of hair to convey the harsh reality of a web of people involved in human trafficking worldwide!”

Ssh! once again delivered an experiential educational experience for professionals in the hair, makeup, fashion and design arenas at the Seymour Center and around the globe via live streaming through liveED; a concept daring in it’s approach and delivery.

What’s next for Ssh! Australia 2017?
We’re keeping that a secret for now!

Returning for the fifth year on October 2016, 15th, Richard Ashforth’s NOISE took over the Institute of Contemporary Arts on Pall Mall, bringing its edgy, underground hairdressing vibe to the Queen’s neighbourhood!

NOISE was created to share knowledge, passion and inspiration, connecting the viewer to the performer with more of a ‘pop up’ feel rather than a formally staged show, pushing the hairdressing industry forward and taking creativity to a whole new level. The last minute announcements of artists and venue purely on social media give the whole event an ‘unexpected feel’, as much for the audience as for the artists!

The SACO team kicked off the proceedings with their three striking colour models ensconced in huge branded jumpsuits, before the team finished off their SACO signature textured pixie crops live on stage.

Polish team Jaga Huplo then brought their models to the stage (complete with NOISE hair wefts covering their faces), cutting the hair to create an exaggerated ‘hair helmet’ before removing these to reveal completely different looks underneath! New headpieces were then added again to change the look once more.

Returning to the NOISE stage this year, session stylist Tyler Johnson created a jagged pixie crop to enhance the cool, dirty blonde of his model’s hair, with a short, sharp bob and jagged fringe cut into his other model – both with cartoon cut out lips and heavy eyebrows.

Croation team Zgat then took over the stage creating their signature style of powerful balances and clean lines with a beautiful, deep pink, razor sharp crop on one model, balanced with a beautifully shiny, clean blonde asymmetric bob on the other.

Mark Anderson and the Creademic team from Copenhagen then brought their models to the stage wearing neon visors and strategically placed NOISE tape to showcase their Rebel collection. With the visors lifted, three pastel coloured bobs were revealed, which were then chopped and razored for a dramatic finish.

The eagerly anticipated entrance of Spanish team and NOISE regulars, Xpresion, then followed, bringing with it the theatre and spectacle this team are renowned for. Presenting their Pollution collection, two models appeared on stage before the team joined them and ‘dressed down’ their hair, backcombing, slicing and pinning. The finale of Xpresion’s show saw a male model appear on the stage where the team painted and sprinkled ash over his hair before he produced dry ice from his collar!

Closing the show, NOISE stalwart and industry legend Tim Hartley presented with his usual artistic flair and created his signature beautiful looks on different models to the norm. A beautiful blonde perm looked incredible on his male model, while an elegant mature model arrived on the stage with an incredible pink hue which was chopped and undercut to an asymmetric, short bob live on stage.

Of the event, organiser Richard Ashforth said: “It was incredible! The very exclusive and special venue added to the electric vibe of the night, and the amazing teams we had this year created such a buzz. The night was a complete sell out – we even had to turn people away – get there early next year so you don’t miss out!”.
