| Migration Law puts pressure on UK |
| The government has passed a ruling to ban hairdressing and beauty salon managers from outside the european Union from coming to work in the UK. This decision now puts the onus clearly on British salon managers to focus on the training and evelopment og home-grown talent, the National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF) has said. The ruling bay the Government follows recommendations made to it by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) that ii should shorten the list of so-called tier 2 skilled occupations, which the Government uses to decide how many visas to grant to various occupations and at what sort of level. Under the restrictions, hairdressing and beauty salon managers have now been included within the MAC’s list of occupations ineligible for migration into the UK, meaning that from April, unless they have graduate-level qualifications, such managers from outside the EU will be unable to apply to come and work in the UK. "If it means more talented British hairdressers getting the chance to step-up and take over the running of salons, then this could only be positive for the industry in the long run," said NHF president Mark Coray. "Hairdressing is a global occupation and, while we of course, don’t want to deter talented stylists from coming to the UK and passing on their skills, we do nrrd to recognise and nurture the diversity of talent that we already have in this country", he said. "Many salons already do a fantastic job in helping people make the progression from junior to stylist to manager, and even one day running their own salon. What a ruling like this does is simply make it even more important our top salons nurture and develop skills at all levels. Salons need to be making people feel they can have a long-term career in hairdressing as well as a great job". |
